Djawadi’s score includes three covers from the band throughout the series’ course: “Motion Picture Soundtrack,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Exit Music (For a Film)”, from the albums Kid A, The Bends, and OK Computer, respectively. The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” are among some of Djawadi’s most notable covers within the show, as are his revisions of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Something I can Never Have” and Amy Winehouse‘s “Back to Black.” However, the act which seems to have inspired the composer most significantly in his scoring for the program is Radiohead. Djawadi transforms a diverse catalogue of classic songs from the past several decades into minimal piano covers and crescendoing symphonic arrangements - something which viewers likely first noticed when Djawadi accompanied the series’ first major battle scene with an epic orchestral version of The Rolling Stones‘ seminal classic, “Paint It, Black.” While Djawadi contributes a number of original compositions to the Westworld score, one of its most satisfying facets is the extensive array of covers he integrates into the score. Among the series’ many subtle strengths is its compelling musical score, arranged by Game of Thrones‘ composer Ramin Djawadi, whose presence in Westworld is immediately apparent in the sonic similarities between the two shows’ opening themes.
